Project Description
Dubai Sports City is the world’s first purpose-built sports city, which includes the following facilities:
- 25,000 seat cricket arena, expandable to 30,000 seats.
- 10,000 seat multi-purpose indoor entertainment centre and stadium for basketball, indoor hockey, volleyball, handball, netball, and ice hockey, and
- 60,000 seat outdoor multi-purpose arena, which was constructed to approximately 30% completion before the project was stopped post GFC
The venues were each designed by German architect von Gerkan, Marg & Partners, with an SCG team member providing the role of Project Director during the procurement and construction phases and leading a project delivery team which included architecture, civil and structural engineering, building services, security design and construction administration services.
The services were delivered to the specifications of the global governing bodies for the relevant sports to host major events in football, cricket, rugby, golf, field hockey, tennis and other sports, however, the designs required substantial modification for compliance with local codes and cultural sensitivities.
