NSW Prison Bed Expansion Program

SCG was engaged in the expansion of the Metropolitan Remand & Reception Centre, where we worked alongside Lendlease to provide security and communications consultancy. The project involved development of new inmate accommodation for 440 medium-security inmates, as well as expansion and modification of essential facilities, including health, education and custodial offices. SCG was responsible for delivering a comprehensive security design, including integration of electronic security and communications systems.

SCG also partnered with Lendlease to provide the security and communications design and planning for the 240-bed expansion of the Cessnock (Minimum/Medium) Correctional Centre. The expansion works included construction of six new 48-bed ‘cottage’ style units, programs and visits buildings and health reception facilities, along with a new gatehouse and secure perimeter. The new Gatehouse building included a new Master Control Room, reintroducing the capability to the facility after previously being managed via the adjacent Shortland Correctional Centre. SCG was responsible for delivering a comprehensive security and communications design, including integration of perimeter security systems and successful demerging of the Shortland and Cessnock Correctional Centre security systems.

At Dillwynia Correctional Centre, SCG partnered with John Holland Group to advise on the security design and planning of a new 248-bed maximum-security female facility. The project required careful coordination to ensure secure operation of the new and existing medium-security facilities while maintaining efficiency in staff movement and inmate control. SCG’s work included security planning for secure controlled walkways, a new segregation unit and upgrades to security management systems.

SCG also provided security design services for a 330-bed expansion at Shortland Correctional Centre as part of the Richard Crookes Construction team. The project featured three new 110-bed maximum-security modular accommodation units, an extended security perimeter, and upgrades to critical infrastructure, including reception, segregation and health facilities. SCG oversaw the design, construction services and commissioning of all security systems, ensuring seamless integration of electronic access control, CCTV, intruder detection and perimeter security enhancements.
