Spencer is a Senior Security Consultant and award-winning security risk and resilience specialist with more than 34 years’ experience across the nuclear, financial, transport, and critical infrastructure sectors. A passionate advocate for the evolution of traditional protective security through innovation and practical application, he is committed to fostering positive security culture, opening the profession to younger generations, and embedding subtle, effective design solutions that create safer, more liveable communities. His philosophy combines diverse professional experience, focused academic knowledge—including a Master’s Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester—and a lifelong dedication to learning and knowledge-sharing.
Spencer’s career began as an Intelligence & Security Operator in the British Army, where he undertook counter-terrorism duties in Northern Ireland, two operational tours in Bosnia, and protective security advisory roles in the UK. He later served eight years as a police officer before moving into corporate and government security management, including senior roles with Queensland Rail, Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Aurizon, where he was recognised as ASIAL’s 2019 Best In-House Security Director for his proactive strategies against disruptive protest activity. He has consulted on landmark projects such as the Qatar Integrated Rail Project and Australia’s Security of Critical Infrastructure Act Amendment Bill, and is widely published on security risk management, CPTED, organisational culture and crisis management. An active member of the International CPTED Association, Spencer continues to influence how protective security is understood, applied and integrated into the built environment.
